The Cayuga Trails 50, presented by Atayne, was host to the USATF 50 Mile Trail Champs last weekend. The Cayuga Trails 50 “has become one of the most competitive 50’s in the country, a US Championship, and one of only a few selection races for the IAU World Trail Team. Beyond the front runners though, the real focus is to provide all entrants, regardless of speediness, a chance to run some of the most beautiful trails in our neck of the world. From continuous and sometimes steep ebbs and flows, waterfalls cascading through slot gorges, single track to runnable park service trails, creek crossings to historic stone stair cases that test the limits of lower extremities, it’s truly a gem.”

From her coach & online contributing editor of Trail Runner Magazine, David Roche – “Today, one of those impossible sports stories unfolded at the US 50 Mile Trail Championships. Corrine Malcolm won, beating a stacked field, and in the process going from a relative unknown to a national champion and member of Team USA. It’s hard to describe the improbability of Corrine’s win. When I started coaching her 1.5 years ago, she was running 20 miles PER WEEK, plagued by constant injuries. We focused every single day on enjoying the grind. She never stopped smiling, never made excuses, and never backed down when I challenged her to do the impossible. Most importantly, she BELIEVED. So many people doubted her. Even this week, she was left out of many race previews, and no one predicted she would be on the podium. But Corrine new. She believed. Now, everyone better believe.”

From Corrine, herself – “Taking over the lead early was not part of the plan…Truthfully the plan was to win a pie. I didn’t realize I was actually going to win the race until I hit the grass 800 meters from the finish alone. It still hasn’t quite set in. The support and well wishes from the community near and far have been overwhelming! Thank you all so much for all your incredible encouragement and for USATF and Red Newt Racing for putting on a wonderful event. Thanks to my Bellingham Distance Project ladies for spending many miles with me on the trail this winter, and the SWAP crew led by @addiedoesstuff for putting faith in little fish. Big thanks to @annajodingman and @jradphd for putting me up in NYC and especially to Anna for getting up early to crew for me and staying up late to get us home! Off to meet up with @settinger in NYC for some celebratory pastry intervals before heading back to the PNW.”
