Gettin’ to Know You – Amber, Nikki, Courtney & Mckinley

We asked some of the women of BDP their go-to’s, from favorite gels, to music, to run specialty’s. Check out what they had to say:

1) What is your favorite gel/goo?

Amber: Power bar gels.  They are “thin” and you don’t need water to take them.  Some other brands are so thick they remind me of toothpaste. Green apple is my fave.
NikkiEspresso Love Gu. I like the caffeine – I’m a coffee addict.
Courtney: Espresso Love Gu or Mint Chocolate Gu. More of a chalkier, or thicker-consistency Gu-person, as opposed to fruit flavors. However, yesterday I just had a Cool Citrus VFuel; a co. in Estes Park, CO, that I really enjoyed.
Mckinley: I’m a fan of the Energy Gu in Chocolate. I can stomach this one the easiest.

2) What is your go-to running outfit?

AmberThis time of year my go to outfit is split shorts and a sports bra.  I love the Saucony ignite split shorts. The look great, keep you cool and make me feel like I’m running more “free.”
NikkiI have Nike tempo shorts in probably 10 different colors; I combine these with the Nike pro sports bra and a tank.
Courtney: I’ve had the same running clothes since college. I wear hand-me-downs from friends, or pieces I find from the thrift store. I seem to grab more Adidas apparel from the 90’s than anything else – their crops, buns, and short-shorts. Nike fits me well, but they tend to ride (front & back). Best sports bra for the summer for me: Target’s.
Mckinley: My go-to running outfit is a pair of Nike capris and a short sleeve shirt. Layers in the PNW are a must during most seasons, so having a long sleeve or light jacket to throw on is nice.

3) What do you listen to when you run?

AmberI listen to music when I run alone.  If it is a 90 min+ run I will put on a Rich Roll podcast.  He interviews inspiring people/athletes. My current  top songs on my my pod: 1) Kick the Dust Up – Luke Bryan 2) American Kids – Kenny Chesney – If I could run in cowboy boots I would.
NikkiI like podcast sermons by Tim Keller or Jeff Manion at Ada Bible church, otherwise it’s a mix of music – old, new, and a variety of genres, anything that makes me happy.
CourtneyI commissioned my friend, Lauren Breihof to upload gangster musik to my ipod – she has really good taste in upbeat, uptempo running music. Beforehand I spent many months listening to rock I was under-savvy about & needed to be educated about, developed by my boyfriend. But, what really gets me through a run is a This American Life, Rich Roll, or at the time, Serial, podcast. Other people’s stories help me get out of my own head.
Mckinley: I don’t listen to music while running. It’s my chance to unplug and enjoy my surroundings.

4) Are you a morning, midday or evening runner?

Amber: Morning runner for sure.  I will run in the evenings if I have a double for the day.  I like getting it done so I can get on with my day.  I am usually worthless after work and the quality of my run suffers.
NikkiI prefer to run mid-morning, but after work is better than early am.
Courtney: I prefer mornings, but if I need sleep, I’ll sleep. I like to get mileage in with doubles, so I’m used to running morning and evenings.
Mckinley: Getting my run done in the morning is my jam. I’ll throw in some evening runs to mix it up.

5) Cross Country, Track, 1/2 Marathon, Marathon? What’s your favorite?

Amber: My favorite distance is the half and full marathon distance.  The longer the better for me.  To date, I have never run a race on a track.  I think I would get dizzy.  There is something about running city streets and gravel trails that is much more appealing to me.
NikkiI love any  race but my best distance is the marathon, so that’s what I usually train for. I think a 1/2 is the most fun, as it’s a perfect balance of length and speed.
Courtney: I’m better suited for the track and short distance stuff; Amber keeps egging me on to run another Steeple, but I love the hard, long grind of  Marathon training. I’ve been focusing on the Marathon for the last 2 years, but hope to drop down to short stuff after the Olympic Trials, pending I make it.
Mckinley: I love 1/2’s (trail and road), and I’m excited to get some good times in the near future.
