Saturday, February 15 – It was a tough day for us at Black Canyon Ultras this past weekend, Saturday, February 15. As previewed in our previous post, Black Canyon Ultras Preview, Thomas was looking to mix it up with the lead pack with the ultimate goal of obtaining a coveted golden ticket for Western States. Excitingly, Nikki changed things up at the last minute and transferred from the 60K to the 100K. Unfortunately both would have to drop out.

There were several DNF’s on the day, including Coree Woltering and Guillaume Hansel; Thomas was sitting in the top 10 for a few hours before suffering from a bout of acid reflux. Each made it to just over 37 miles prospectively, near Rock Springs, Black Canyon City Aid #6 (Mile 37.4). Nikki made unfortunate contact with a rock at mile 10, which made it impossible to walk or run without limping, and somehow managed to walk another 9-10 miles before eventually calling it.

“Super excited to to attempt my first 100K. Didn’t even get a chance to experience the real suffer. Felt good and was on my goal until I injured my hip at mile 10. Walked 9 hoping it would improve. Tried everything I could at the aid station before finally giving in to the DNF.”

Hayden Hawks won the 100K (having already obtained entry to Western States, his golden ticket would go down to the next male; the same would be true of the women’s race winner, Camille Herron), finishing in 7:54:01, followed by Charlie Ware in 2nd in 8:17:54 and Elliot Cardin in 3rd in 8:18:02. Ware and Cardin were awarded the golden tickets.

The women’s 100K Champ was Camille Herron (10th OA) in 9:19:01, followed by Cecilia Flori in 2nd in 9:25:33 and Stephanie Auston in 3rd in 9:29:17. The 2nd & 3rd place females, both from Australia, were able to secure their golden tickets, due to Camille already having entry into WS. Full results for the 100K & 60K can be found HERE!

Saturday, February 15 – Out at Lake Sylvia State Park in Montesano, WA, our guy Maxx raced the Run Forest Run 25K hosted by Oly Trail Runners Club, as he puts finishing touches on training leading to Way Too Cool next month. The 25K course is a loop made up of mostly single and double track trail, 3k in vert gain, and finishes along the shoreline of Lake Sylvia. Maxx finished 3rd in 2:47:56 behind Rob Kyker of Seattle (2nd in 2:40) and Andrew Bachman of Seattle in 1st (2:39:49).

Saturday & Sunday, February 15 – 16 – Alyson started the Spartan season off at the San Jose Super and Sprint in Diablo Grande, CA. Listen to this intense race preview – “According to Miwok and Ohlone mythology, Mount Diablo is the place where the world began…Under the warm glow of the California sun, Spartans will come together to brave heat and hills on an expansive range of wooded trails. On a low, ancient savannah rich with legend, thousands of Spartans will join in celebration, vie for glory, and enjoy the renewal that only comes after a day of relentless drive. That, or they will bow at the feet of the unforgiving, blood-red Mount Diablo.”

In the Super Elite, which took place on Saturday, Alyson took 3rd (26th OA) behind Nicole McManus (2nd) and Alicia Kueker (1st)! Then, the following day, Sunday, in the Sprint Elite, Alyson took 2nd (15th OA) behind Natlai Miano! What! What a stud!
