Introducing our Men’s Division!!!

Back in 2013 a few Bellingham women got together to create something they thought the city was currently missing – a community for serious post-collegiate female runners. Right out of college, where I’d competed on the National stage in XC, indoor and outdoor track, I dabbled in some club teams, in assistance coaching, but ended up taking a few years off from competing. For one, it was probably necessary after years of hard effort, but also it was because I didn’t know how to continue to be serious about running and competing outside of the scope of college. Of a coach, given. Of a team, given. Of races, chosen. And, really, it was like I had worked with these things – a program, a team, a coach since I was in elementary school; it felt like I had taken for granted all of this good stuff, to the point that when I didn’t have it, I felt dropped, lost, that everything I’d invested in, in those years competing and running on a team, which instilled in me a lifelong competitor and teammate, had a shelf life.

When I stopped feeling sorry for myself, moved back to Bellingham, and found that there were all these incredibly talented women, together, we knew we had to create something that would encourage post-collegiate athletes to feel that support and like-mindedness, that fire, that competitive spirit, that platform to aid each and all of us to reach our goals no matter how ambitious. That’s how the Bellingham Distance Project started. And here we are, 4 years later, grown to 14 women, with specialties in road, trail, ultra, adventure and beyond.

And, here we are, 4 years later, welcoming a new division of Bellingham Distance Project – a Men’s Team! We’ve been talking about it for quite some time, really wanting to provide for local men the same platform we were able to create for the women of Bellingham, and, with these three incredible core members, we are able to! We want to extend a warm welcome to David Larpenteur, Leighton Overson, and Maxx Antush! We are so incredibly excited about these three incredible men. David and Leighton are triathletes as well as runners, and have been competing locally and on National and World stages for years. They balance their training and competing with full time jobs, and for Leighton, a family, including 3 little nuggets. Maxx is a graduate student at WWU studying Exercise Science. His focus is on trails; he’s a top contender in all races he takes on. The women of BDP have spent a good deal of time with these men already, competing alongside at local races, on Ragnar teams, in training runs in the mountains. Together, we hope to help one another reach our goals and support one another in life outside of running and competing.
