Bellingham Bay Marathon Weekend!

Sunday, September 30th – The Bellingham Bay Marathon (and half, 10k, 5k) set off – the marathoners from Lummi Nation, near Gooseberry Point at 7:30 am as a light rain began to fall. The half marathoners from downtown Bellingham, outside Boundary Bay Brewery at 9:00 am; the 10k’ers and 5k’ers from the same location at 9:15 am. Many of our teammates and friends helped pace the marathon and half, and as always, had a great time doing so. Thomas set out to tackle the marathon’s point-to-point course, just 15 days post the Mt. Bachelor 50k, but opted out at mile 16 to save himself for some upcoming races. A dear friend of BDP, Tommy Race helped pace the 8:34/mile group for the first half of the marathon, and then went on to finish the race in 3:22, cutting down the whole way, and taking 3rd Whatcom County Male; if that wasn’t already cool, he also ran back onto the course post finish to bring his pace group in. What an incredible man!
In the half marathon, Fairhaven Runners’ stud Dillon Quintana took 1st in a finishing time of 1:08:10. On the women’s side, Alma was 4th F and Nikki was 7th F. In the 10k, Amber was 3rd OA and 1st F. In the 5k Jonathan was 1st, followed closely by teammate Derek in 2nd.

It wasn’t a fast day by any means, but it was a strong day, where our athletes got to dig in to the pain cave on the roads when they’ve been trail racing all summer, or training for other things. An important takeaway is that you don’t always have to be at your best to show up and race. We love our hometown race, and all that it supports, and really value being able to race and help with pacing. Thank you Bellingham Bay Marathon and all the volunteers for another fun year, and congratulations to all of who raced your heart out, whether or not it came with a sexy outcome.
Speaking of sexy outcomes…we at BDP want to give a shoutout to team fan, friend, and athlete of Nikki’s – April Thomson, who had a 12 minute PR in the half marathon yesterday!! She had a dream goal, and she shattered that dream goal. We’re really proud of her. Congrats April, you deserve it!
